DI is deeply concerned about the situation of Kurdish prisoners, including journalists, civil society activists and human rights defenders, who have been on hunger strike since 25 August 2008 to protest against their detention and the constant harassment by the authorities.

Iran: DI Supports Ms. Bayazidi
Human rights activist Ms. Bayazidi was arrested recently and sentenced to 4 years in prison. Her family and lawyer have not been allowed to meet her. To protest the revolutionary court charges Ms. Bayazidi embarked on a full hunger strike, which she ended after more than a week due to her failing health. DI calls on Iranian government to drop all judicial proceedings against her. DI member Ms. Bayazidi must not be punished for human rights activities.

Dr. Inge Genefke calls for countries to adopt the convention on torture. Dr. Genefke has devoted her career specifically to the treatment and rehabilitation of victims of torture. she is a great supporter of Defend International and DI members who have been subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Iraq: DI Condemns Murder of Journalist Soran Hama
Journalist Soran Hama was assassinated in the city of Kirkuk on 21 July 2008. DI is saddened by the assassination of Mr. Hama, and Dr Widad issued a statement today from Glen Cove Mansion in New York.
