Norway: Convention on Cluster Munitions Signing Conference

Over 100 states have decided to probibit the use, development, production, stockpiling and transfer of inaccurate and unrelibale cluster munitions. The signing of the Convention on Cluster Munitions took place in Oslo from 2-4 December 2008. Cluster Munition Coalition, Defend International and civil society organisations around the world called on high-level representatives to personally sign the treaty in Oslo.

Campaign to End Juvenile Death Penalty

On the occasion of the World Day Against the Death Penalty, DI and its member organisations call on citizens around the wrold to take action to end executions in the MENA region. Between January 2005 and September 2008, the following states had executed 32 juvenile offenders.

Iran: 4th Campaign for Hasanpoor & Butimar

The Kurdish activist Mr. Hiwa Butimar is still in jail. While the Tehran Supreme Court on September 4, 2008 overturned the death sentence against the journalist Adnan Hassanpour. His case is sent back to the revolutionary tribunal in the city of Sanandaj. DI is deeply concerned for the well-being of Mr. Butimar who currently awaits execution and Mr. Hassanpur who is facing serious charges that may even result in 20 years imprisonment.

IPI Campaign Calls for Justice for Journalists Worldwide

The International Press Institute (IPI) has just announced the start of a new campaign, Justice Denied, which will also focus on the two Kurdish journalists Hassanpour and Butimar. IPI’s Justice Denied Campaign highlights compelling stories of impunity and the imprisonment of journalists worldwide, ensuring that these stories remain visible, particularly amongst key decision makers.
