Defend International has expressed deep concern at the horrific wave of terrorist attacks that has hit Beirut and Paris on 12 and 13 November, respectively.
DI co-founder, Dr. Widad issued today a statement, in which she sent her heartfelt condolences and sympathies to ALL families and victims affected by the Beirut- and Paris attacks. “Our thoughts and hearts are with Paris, France, Beirut and Lebanon in this time of loss and grief,” she said. “Day after day, the globalization of terrorism becomes more evident. This is one of the biggest challenges we are facing. We must stand with the innocent people around the world who are suffering or have lost their loved ones as a result of terrorism.”
She posted on twitter that she is asking everyone to stand together as one nation against the killing of innocent citizens.
On November 13, Paris was struck by a series of coordinated attacks that consisted of two suicide attacks and explosions outside the Stade de France stadium, shootings at restaurants (including Le Petit Cambodge and Le Carillon) and a a hostage-taking massacre inside the Bataclan theatre. At least 129 people lost their lives in the Paris attacks and over 350 people were injured, 99 of whom in critical condition.
On November 12, a pair of suicide bombings struck southern Beirut, killing 43 people and injuring at least 239 others.
In the immediate aftermath of these horrific attacks, millions of DI members, supporters and friends lit candles for the victims and their families.
