Syria: Prisoner of conscience Mr. Habib

Syrian authorities arrests a 70 years old man, who suffers from health problems and his fate still unknown.

Name: Abdul Rahman Habib

Sex: Male

Age: 70

Authorities: Syrian

Category: Fear of torture or ill-treatment / incommunicado detention / prisoners of conscience / medical concern

The case:

Defend International has received reports from DI Defenders in Syria confirming the arrest of Mr. Abdul Rahman Habib by the authorities in the village Sanjaq Saadoun of Amuda city. The arrest occurred on July 12, 2007, and according to several sources, the fate of the 70 years old man, who suffers from health problems, is still unknown.

DI Defenders report that he has been transferred to detention centre in Damascus, without following any formal procedures. Afterward nobody has been in touch with him, and so far the authorities haven’t pointed out the charges he is facing. Mr. Habib is believed to be held incommunicado, which puts him at grave risk of torture and/or other forms of ill-treatment.

DI Demands:

Defend International calls upon the Syrian authorities to release Mr. Habib immediately and unconditionally unless he is charged with a recognizable criminal offence, in which case he must be given a fair and prompt trial.

As a state party to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, Syria must uphold its obligations as defined in the Convention, including ensuring that Mr. Habib will not be subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Defend International urges the Syrian authorities to arrange for Mr. Habib to get access to a lawyer of his own choosing, his family and any medical treatment he needs.

DI campaign:

Please copy the following appeals, add your signature and address and send them to arrive as soon as possible.

With thanks and appreciation

Your Excellency,

I write to express my concern to learn that the elder man, Mr. Abdul Rahman Habib, was reportedly detained on 12 July 2007 in Amuda, and is now held at an unknown location. I would like to point out that Mr. Habib has several health problems and his life maybe in danger.

I am also concerned that he is detained incommunicado, where torture is most frequently practiced according to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture. I urge you to ensure that Mr. Habib is not tortured. Furthermore I call on you to release him immediately and unconditionally unless he is charged with a recognizable criminal offence and given a fair and prompt trial.

I would like to remind the authorities that Mr. Habib must be given immediate access to a lawyer of his own choosing, his family and any medical treatment he may require.

I hope for your urgent attention to this matter.

Yours respectfully,
