Syria: DI Declares Solidarity With Mr. Riad Saif

Oslo // Defend International expresses concern over receiving reports about the health of Mr. Riad Saif, a former independent Syrian MP, who needs treatment outside Syria but is denied a passport. Defend International urges the Syrian authorities to take all steps to ensure that Mr. Saif recieves the medical treatment needed.

Defend International is deeply concerned about the health of Mr. Riad Saif, a former independent Syrian MP, a businessman and a “Damascus Spring” activist, who was released from jail in January 2006 after serving five years for his activities in the “Damascus Spring” movement.

He is now reportedly seriously ill and suffers from prostate cancer. Apparently he needs treatment outside Syria. Following his release, officials denied him a passport.

Defend International has received appeals regarding Mr. Saif from the Association for Human Rights and Civil Society and others asking us to intervene.

Defend International hereby declares solidarity with Mr. Saif and demands the Syrian authorities to take all necessary steps and appropriate measures to ensure that Mr. Saif recieves the medical treatment he desperately needs outside Syria.
