Family of eight has no home and no support. Read about them; you will not forget them. Defend International urges the governments to protect vulnerable groups from neglect, domestic violence, harassment, exploitation and abuse.
Campaign Status: Closed
Name: Mother Jomaa Ali and her seven children, 2 of them twins
Sex: Males & females
Authorities: Moroccan
Category: Concern about the family’s health, safety and condition
The case:
Since 16 July 2007, a family with 7 children, their ages range from four months to thirteen years, is trying to survive waiting for charities near Khaled Ibn Al-Walid mosque in Taourirt, Morocco.
Family story:
One of Defend International Defenders visited this family and had to face the mother’s tears, while telling her story from the beginning with details, since her first marriage when she was 16 years old. After her divorce she married Hamid who is unemployed and lives in poverty. She and some of her children have been subjected to many acts of domestic violence. The rest also witnessed the violence .
Jomaa’s family inhabited previously a neighborhood called “Harsha Mojennbh”, in one “Nwala” made of cane, straw, clay and tin. The authorities implemented a rehousing project and demolished the neighborhood. Hamid got a plot of land, but they couldn’t afford to build a house.
As a result, Hamid sent his family to live with his mother in her little old house. The only income that was shared by the family was the salary of Jomaa’s 13 years old daughter, who was working as maid and house cleaner. Her brothers and sisters sold plastic bags at municipal market. The father is spending all their money on alcohol. Some kids do not have birth certificates, and going to school is not an option for the 7 children.
Family condition:
The report of our DI Defender included statements from Jomaa. On the night of Sunday, July 15, 2007 Hamid beat her and the kids, two of them are four months old twins. They were all shocked. The family found itself on the side of the street. Hamid forced them to get out of his mother’s house. The street became Jomaa Ali and her kids ‘ real home, but the family was surprised by the silence of the public opinion.
The Moroccan authorities did not take action to assist the family by for instance ensuring decent livelihood opportunities, despite Jomaa’s several try with Taourirt Court and the police.
DI Demands:
Defend International demands the Moroccan Ministry of Social Development, Family and Solidarity and other relevant actors to move on in order to protect this family and to save the children.
In addition, Defend International also demands the establishment of a General Administration for Social Protection, which can take certain measures aimed at ensuring the protection of the groups below from neglect, punishment, verbal abuses, violence, physical and psychological harassment, threats and sexual exploitation and abuse:
- Children under 18 years of age;
- Women, whatever their age or mental or physical or social conditions are; and
- Vulnerable groups in society, including the needy families, orphans, elderly and those with special needs.
Details of these recommendations will be published later in Defend International’s project 2007.
DI campaign:
Please copy the following appeals to reach as soon as possible to the Ministry of Social Development, Family and Solidarity Ministry of Justice and Ministry of State to the Prime Minister in charge of housing and reconstruction. Please add your signature and address and send them to arrive as soon as possible.
With thanks and appreciation
