Defend International (DI) was accredited to participate in the UN Third Biennial Meeting of States (New York) to consider the implementation of the Programme of Action to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects. The Programme of Action was approved by Member States in 2001. DI represents the voices and experiences of civil society in the MENA region.
On the occasion of the Global Week of Action Against Gun violence DI Defender Mr. Adham Tobail organised important seminars and meetings in Gaza, in close collaboration with other civil society organisations.
During a press conference organised by Defend International at the European Parliament on 2 June 2008, an expert panel consisting of academicians asked the European countries to delist the Kurdistan Workers Party from the list of terrorist organisations and give peace a chance. The panel consisted of Dr. Widad (chair), associate Professor Kariane Westrheim, Professor Michael Gunter and former Director of medico International Hans Branscheidt! “Our main message is that dialogue and reconciliation at all levels of the society should be encouraged in Turkey to ultimately foster a peaceful and an inclusive society,” said Dr. Widad.

DI co-founder Dr. Widad attended the United Nations 62nd General Assembly to take part in the UN First Committee, as well as bilateral and multilateral meetings with government delegates.
