Save The Free World:

Ensure The Security of Civilians

MEDIA RELEASE

9 January 2015

(Oslo) – Defend International (DI) strongly condemns the terrorist attacks on the Paris offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the Kosher supermarket, and the small printing business, killing at least 17 innocent civilians, including 8 journalists. We extend our profound sympathy to the families and friends of victims, and stand in solidarity with France in this terrible time of mourning.

These despicable acts of terror represent attacks on freedom of expression and humanity as a whole. Therefore, DI is hereby announcing the launch of the worldwide campaign “Save Free World: Ensure Security of Civilians.” Our primary aims are (1) to raise awareness about the new reality in the world and (2) urge the authorities to act immediately to ensure the safety and security of citizens in all countries. Nationally, the respective governments should look at ways to prevent further terror attacks on civilians, including considering a ban on groups that are likely to constitute a threat to national security.

“We are aware that banning alone is not enough. However, if we are passive, we’ll be partly responsible for the innocent lives lost. We share a responsibility for the safety and security of civilians,” said Dr. Widad, co-founder of Defend International.

In addition, we urge the authorities in Western countries to periodically evaluate and carefully monitor both religious and teaching centers. Ideally, these institutions are supposed to play a multifunctional role in how minorities adapt to their host countries. They are not supposed to be used for political purposes.

The campaign will be inclusive, informal, and pragmatic. Participation is open to all Governments, organisations and associations that are willing to endorse the objectives mentioned above and that are motivated to invest time and effort in fulfilling them collectively.
